Coat-of-Arms

In the transept area, on the right, and on a large rhomboidal tombstone, there is an inscription made up of only two letters -an M and an L, separated by a white coat-of-arms..

They were described in detail by a late 19th Century scholar: "One can see an animal, perhaps a wolf, in the act of climbing a tree as it ascends a mountain. This could be the Lupo (=wolf), or Lovo, family coat-of-arms; and the two capital letters may stand for Matteo (Matthew), Marco (Mark) or Michele (Michael) Lovo. We know that a certain Lovo family lived in the S. Salvador area and that the Ponte del Lovo (Lovo Bridge) was probably named after them." - (G. Tassini, Iscrizioni della chiesa e convento di S. Salvatore in "Venezia illustrata", Venezia 1895, pag. 31).
From the Ponte del Lovo (see aside) one can enjoy a unique view of St. Mark's bell-tower.
