The new organ at San Salvador

 When Old meets New

The new instrument, based on a historic Renaissance model and constructed thanks to a generous donation received from abroad, is

the result of the skilful workmanship and technical expertise of Master Jürgen Ahrend and his son Hendrik, director of the firm, along with the practical collaboration of Francesco Zanin,  Master Organaro, a Venetian organ craftsman.

The construction began when the parish of San Salvador received from the Office for the Ecclesiastical Cultural Heritage of the Patriarchate the authorization from the Superintendence P.S.A.D. on 17 March 2008 and for the museums in Venice and surrounding municipalities on 12 March 2008 with document protocol 1758-34.16.10.

The austere simplicity and typical Veneto-Renaissance contour and style of the new organ are the result of the work conducted following the precise observations made during preliminary studies of the original case and structure. The choice of materials (walnut, fir, cedar;  external tin pipes and internal lead ones) and  the accurate and thorough cleaning of the wood surfaces and panels, performed during a conservative maintenance, as indicated by the Superintendence during its inspections, concur to an overall harmonious and pleasant visual whole; the new parts imperceptibly blending into the old. The same can be said about the perfect  acoustical environment of the San Salvador church building. Venice now has a musical instrument with the characteristics needed to perform the vast and important organ music composed here during the Renaissance.

The old organ mechanism and wood parts are now kept in a room belonging to the Sacristy and in accordance with the indications given by the above authorization.
