New Organ

A Renaissance Organ in Venice!

A Renaissance Organ in San Salvador: new in ancient

The Church of San Salvador bears witness to the splendour of Venice in the 16th century.

Amidst its vaults and domes the fine arts meet: architecture, painting, sculpture converge creating a magnificent ambience for divine worship and the elevation of the human spirit. And yet something is lacking to complete this marvellous symposium: organ music.

Not that the church is without a musical instrument: the stupendous 16 th century organ case above the chancel contains an 18 th century musical instrument, known a “callidiano”; but since the instrument's first instalment in the restricted space, and over the years and the many alterations, it has remained silent.

Jean Jaquenod, the internationally acclaimed organist, has understood and given voice to this silence which pervades the Church of San Salvador . He has in fact decided to donate a new organ, constructed according to the Renaissance model, and have it placed in the 16 th century organ case by his friend Jungen Ahrend, considered to be one of the world's finest organ builders.

The Parish—whilst assuring and safeguarding the cultural heritage of the old organ by placing it in a new position inside the church—welcomes such a generous donation and is honoured to have Master Jaquenod as the official organist of San Salvador . The numerous expressions of encouragement received so far from competent authorities and experts confirm that such an initiative represents both a pastoral and cultural enrichment, a sign of a “Renaissance” or “rebirth” in and of Venice; something felt deeply and valued highly by all those who truly love the City.
