Restorations

Before the restoration

In the Chapel of the Sacrament, two paintings, one from each side of the altar in the apse, have been removed by the specialized firm Capovilla-Pruneri in order to undergo a conservation treatment. The intervention is completely sponsored by the Associazione Sant’Appolonia whose purpose it is to safeguard and promote the ecclesiastic architectural and artistic heritage of Venice. Dott.ssa Anna Fornezza has examined the paintings and made the following assessment of their characteristics and physical condition:

.
Deposition of Christ, XVII century, oil on canvas
Current location: Chapel of the Sacrament, left-hand side

.
Resurrection, XVII century, oil on canvas
Current location: Chapel of the Sacrament, right-hand side

Current physical condition of the paintings: poor

Objective description and assessment of the paintings:

Surface is uniformly covered with dust, diffused oxidation , the canvas support has become very loose on the frame, patchy surface stucco additions.
The initial technical examination also revealed that the paintings were originally located elsewhere before being mounted in their current place in San Salvatore. Both canvases had been enlarged through the use of additions and extensions so as to adapt their size to the new location. and consequently had been given a different iconographic composition.

Preliminary phases of the conservation treatment:

  • Paintings are dismantled and placed on the floor
  • Packing in crates and transport to the restoration laboratory
  • Cleaning with distilled water, repeatedly and progressively

Direction of works: dott.ssa Annalisa Bristot, a superintendent for the Architectural Heritage of Venice

Conservator: The restoration firm Capovilla-Pruneri owned by Giovanna Capovilla

Expected duration of the conservation treatment: June 2004 through October 2004.
